Sperlonga |
|
Sperlonga is a small town situated on
S. Magno mountain, along the S.S. 217, its name derives from several
caves along its coast, in latin “speluncae” .
Even Romans noticed the beauty of this coast so that Tiberio Emperor builded a villa in Sperlonga using one of di natural cave- “ the Tiberio’s cave”. In the 1957 thanks to archaeological foundings in this cave borned the “National Archaeological Museum”. In the middle-age the town of sperlonga was attacked several times by saracens, so the citizen builded four defensive towers (central tower, nibbio tower, truglia tower and capovento tower), but it was useless: in the 1534 the town was destroyed by Khair ed-Din. In the XVI and XVII centuries Sperlonga assumed the actual aspect. Nobody can denies that Sperlonga is the “pearl” of Flacca road: the village keeps entirely its original core with white building, little archs between alleis, very small streets and stairs that from the main square leads to the very uncontaminated sea in Lazio. Infact, Sperlonga won the title “Bandiera Blu d’Europa” for the eighth year consecutively, moreover the title of “Borgo più bello d’Italia” has been assigned to Sperlonga.
